James drove straight to the hotel. He was worried. The roads of Texas stretched before him, but he barely noticed the traffic or the red lights. All he could think about was Emily. Why was she in a hotel? Why didn’t she stay with her parents or friends? Why had she disappeared without a word? The diary told part of the truth, but James felt there was more. At last, he pulled up at the hotel she had mentioned. He rushed to the reception desk and asked for her room number. The receptionist gave it, and he ran to the elevator, his heart pressing against his chest with fear. When he reached her door, he knocked. No answer. He knocked again, louder this time. Still silence. Something was wrong. He turned the handle. To his surprise, the door was unlocked. Slowly, he pushed it open, and the sight before him almost froze his blood. Emily was lying on the floor, motionless. Around her were bottles—empty bottles of alcohol, scattered everywhere. The air was filled with the sour smell of drink. ...
Lily sat on the edge of her bed like someone who was seriously worried. The room was quiet except for the sound of her own breathing. She had made up her mind that Dr. John could never find out she was pregnant before the wedding. She skipped breakfast and only took small bites at lunch, convincing herself that eating less would keep her belly from growing too fast. Each time she looked in the mirror, she turned to the side to check if anything was showing. The fear in her heart grew stronger every day.
Dr. John noticed that she was eating very little. One evening, while they sat at his dining table, he said softly, “Lily, you’ve not been eating well lately. Is something wrong? You’re losing weight.” She forced herself to smile and shook her head. “No, I’m fine. I just don’t have much appetite these days.” Dr. John frowned. “Maybe you should see a doctor. You know I could check you myself.” But Lily quickly shook her head again. “No, really, I’m fine. I’ll be okay.” She changed the subject before he could ask more questions.
In truth, Lily was afraid. She knew that if she followed Dr. John to the hospital, they would run all the normal tests, and a pregnancy test would be one of them. That would be the end of everything. She could not risk it. So she told herself she would endure the nausea, the tiredness, and the strange feelings in her body. She would not let anyone suspect the truth. Each night, she lay in bed, holding her stomach, telling herself to be patient until the wedding day came.
Meanwhile, Mekus had not given up on her. Every few days, he tried to call her, hoping she would answer. But each time, his calls went unanswered. He sent her long messages, pouring out his heart, but she never replied. “Lily, please talk to me,” one of his messages read. “I don’t care if you’re with someone else. I just want to hear your voice.” Still, there was only silence from Lily’s side. The distance between them was like a deep, cold ocean.
Then came the news Lily had been dreading. Dr. John sat her down one afternoon with a serious look on his face. “Lily, I have something to tell you. The hospital is sending me to Ohio for a three-month training program. I’ll have to travel next month.” Lily’s heart skipped. “What about the wedding?” she asked quickly. Dr. John sighed. “We’ll have to postpone it until I get back. I’m sorry, but this training is important for my career.”
Lily tried to hide her panic, but her hands were shaking under the table. Postponing the wedding meant more time for her pregnancy to grow. She could not hide it forever. “Three months is a long time,” she said softly. “Can’t we do the wedding before you go?” Dr. John shook his head. “I wish we could, but there’s just not enough time to prepare.” He reached for her hand and smiled. “Don’t worry, Lily. The time will fly.” But she knew the time would not fly for her—it would feel like forever.
The next day, Mekus tried to call her again. She looked at his name flashing on her phone and sighed. “Why won’t he just give up?” she muttered. She remembered the times he would surprise her with flowers from the roadside, even though he could barely afford them. She remembered how he once stood in the rain waiting for her when her car broke down. But she quickly pushed the memories away. Mekus had nothing to offer her now. Love alone would not raise a child in comfort. She placed the phone face down and let it ring.
By evening, Lily had made up her mind. She would visit Dr. John’s house and spend the night there. She would make it romantic, light candles, cook dinner, and wear his favorite perfume. She would make sure the moment felt natural so that he wouldn’t suspect her real reason. As she packed a small overnight bag, she told herself over and over again that it was necessary. She was doing it for her future and for the future of the child growing inside her.
She zipped up her bag, stood in front of the mirror, and took a deep breath. “If he sleeps with me, it will be easier to pin the pregnancy on him,” Lily said quietly to her reflection. She held her stomach gently, feeling a strange mix of fear and determination. She knew the days ahead would not be easy, but she had chosen her path. There was no turning back now.
