James drove straight to the hotel. He was worried. The roads of Texas stretched before him, but he barely noticed the traffic or the red lights. All he could think about was Emily. Why was she in a hotel? Why didn’t she stay with her parents or friends? Why had she disappeared without a word? The diary told part of the truth, but James felt there was more. At last, he pulled up at the hotel she had mentioned. He rushed to the reception desk and asked for her room number. The receptionist gave it, and he ran to the elevator, his heart pressing against his chest with fear. When he reached her door, he knocked. No answer. He knocked again, louder this time. Still silence. Something was wrong. He turned the handle. To his surprise, the door was unlocked. Slowly, he pushed it open, and the sight before him almost froze his blood. Emily was lying on the floor, motionless. Around her were bottles—empty bottles of alcohol, scattered everywhere. The air was filled with the sour smell of drink. ...
Lily did not want to give up on Mekus. She loves him and has no other option. She picked up her phone to call Mekus again. Her heart was beating fast, but she knew she had to try one more time. When he answered, she spoke softly with a broken heart. “Mekus, please, there’s something I need to tell you. It’s very important. I can’t say it on the phone. I need to look you in the eyes when I say it.” Mekus hesitated, clearly remembering the hurt she had caused him. But Lily did not give up. She begged until he finally agreed to see her that weekend.
When Saturday came, Lily dressed carefully, though her heart was not settled about the visit. She kept rehearsing in her mind how she would start the conversation. The taxi ride to Mekus’s new place felt longer than the first time she visited. When she arrived, she stood outside for a moment, taking a deep breath before knocking. The door opened, and Mekus stood there looking different—stronger, more confident. He stepped aside to let her in.
“Thank you for allowing me,” she whispered, stepping inside. The beautiful new apartment is filled with fine furniture and modern decorations.
She walked slowly around the living room, taking in the details. Everything looked new and well arranged. The cushions were soft, the curtains bright, and a big flat-screen TV stood on the wall. On the dining table was a bowl of fresh fruit. She could smell the faint scent of air freshener in the room. Lily turned to look at him and smiled faintly. “You’ve done well for yourself, Mekus,” she said sincerely. “You didn’t give up on life, even after I gave up on you.” Her voice trembled slightly, guilt hiding under the compliment.
Mekus just nodded with a calm face. “Life moves on, Lily,” he said simply. “When people leave you, you can either stay on the ground or get up and work harder.” His words hit her, and she could feel the weight of her choices pressing on her. She nodded slowly, unable to respond. Mekus offered her a seat, and they both sat down. He poured her a glass of water, and for a moment, the silence between them was almost too heavy to bear. Lily knew it was time to say what she came to say.
“Mekus, I am pregnant… and it’s your child.” She watched his face, hoping for even a flicker of softness, but instead, his eyebrows lifted slightly in surprise. Then, slowly, a cold look filled his eyes. He leaned back in his chair and shook his head.
“Lily, I haven’t touched you in months. How could the baby be mine?” His voice was calm, but there was disbelief in it. She opened her mouth to speak, but he raised his voice, stopping her from saying anything else.
“You left me for another man. You were ready to marry him. You slept under his roof. Now, suddenly, you’re pregnant, and you come to me? No, Lily. I know what you’re trying to do. That child is not mine. You’re only here because your plan with the other man failed.” His words were like sharp stones thrown at her. Lily shook her head desperately.
“It’s not like that, Mekus. I made mistakes, yes, but the baby is yours.” She said. He stood up before she could finish.
“I don’t want to hear it,” Mekus said firmly, his voice now carrying anger. “When I was struggling, you couldn’t stand by me. You didn’t believe in me. Now that I am getting my life together, you come back with stories. You think I will just accept a pregnancy I know nothing about? No. I will not be part of your lies, Lily. I built this new life for myself, and I will not let you drag me back into pain.” He pointed toward the door. “Get out of my apartment.”
Lily’s eyes were filled with tears. She stood slowly, her legs feeling weak. “Please, Mekus… if you ever loved me, just hear me out.” Her voice cracked as she took a step closer to him. But Mekus didn’t move, didn’t soften. “I did love you,” he said quietly, “but that was before you showed me how little I meant to you. Love cannot survive in a place where there is no respect and no truth. You made your choice, Lily. Now, live with it.” His words left no room for argument.
Her chest felt pain as she walked toward the door. Her vision was blurry with tears. She wanted to say more, to explain everything, but she could see it was useless. Mekus’s mind was closed, and nothing she could say would change that. She stepped outside, the warm afternoon air hitting her face like a reminder that the world had moved on without her. Behind her, she heard the door close firmly, the sound echoing in her heart. She stood there for a moment before slowly walking away with regret.
As Lily walked down the street, she knew that she had lost him completely. The man she once thought was too poor for her was now living the life she had wanted—but without her. And the man she had chosen over him had rejected her as well. She had gambled with love and lost everything. With each step, the reality sank deeper: there was no going back to the way things used to be. Mekus had closed his door, and she had no choice but to face the consequences of the choices she made.
